The “Suspension” collection challenges perception by playing off two illusions of motion. Chains, normally fluid, are here static, frozen in motion—yet in many of the collection’s pieces they find new motion by flowing into spirals. Julie Lee turns expectations upside down in “Suspension,” inverting faceted spinels to make studs and inscribing a word of rebellion in an otherwise delicate ring. Her designs are intentionally gender-fluid and strike a conscious balance between sensuality and strength. Lee draws inspiration from New York’s ever-changing street scenes. Like the city, her jewelry has a fierce underbelly, an uncaged spirit prowling beneath its outer polish.
